8. Peculiar tradition: Believe it or not, there are only 12 girls in that interior village, by name “Devda”, near “Jaisalmeer” town in the state of Rajasthan, in India. The population of that village is 2000 only. Rajputs are the dominating sect in that village (being 70% of the population). The last marriage of a girl, born in that village, took place105 years (in 1902 AD) back.

Of the 12 girls, the oldest girl age is 10 years and the youngest infant age is 1 months only. The cause is that, they have been practicing that bad tradition of “killing” the just born infant girls, for the last so many years. The villagers say that they are killing the girls, as they could not give sufficient dowry to the sun-in-laws in the marriage of their daughters, due to their poverty.

Now the trend is gradually changing, Recently ,10 years back(in 1997) the marriage of one girl (aged about 17 years a the time of marriage) born in that village took place. The cause of change in their thinking is mainly due to “Indirsingh”, an inhabitant of that village.

27 years back, his wife gave birth to a girl. The villagers brought pressure on him, to kill that girl child. But he refused to kill his daughter, as already 3 male children born in that family were died and the present girl was born as the 4th child. Even though, his relatives and others in the village tried their level best to convince him, Indirsingh did not kill his daughter. He gave the name to her daughter a “Jawan kaur” and now she is 27 years old and got married recently.

Other families in the village are now realizing their folly and are trying to get rid of that bad tradition.
