iPad: New gadget from Apple

Around 5 lakh students appeared for the IIT-JEE 2010. And many more appeared for other engineering and medical entrance examinations. Students travel to different parts of the country, either to appear in exams or for an extended study period. The most important thing which they need apart from food, shelter and clothing are books. Business professionals are always on the move and have to go through various files and documents pertaining to their work. By and large, everyone one of us is related to paper work and internet in some way or the other. However, it is always not possible to carry books, files and documents along with us. We can have an access to internet through our mobiles but the convenience of a small screen is not always satisfactory. The iPad is one product which has the potential to bring about a revolution in this field.

iPad is the latest development of the ‘i’ series and from where has it come? The answer is so obvious to us; Apple Inc. Apple was the first company to bring about a revolution in the personal computer domain when it introduced the Macintosh, way back in the early 1980s. The iPod was introduced at the beginning of the new millennium and was received with huge following. The iPhone followed suit and overcame all odds to become a popular feature for the younger generation. Apple has now come up with a new product called iPad which promises to leave behind all other tablet computers.

A tablet computer, as one would assume, is a computer on a ‘tablet’ or screen. Both the screen and the keyboard can be viewed on the display screen and the typing can be done by using a digital pen, stylus or even fingertips. The iPad is one such product which is meant for internet browsing, gaming, simple content creation and most importantly book or document reading. Its area of application lies between laptops and smart phones thus giving it a primary opening to the customized buyers’ market.

The Wi-Fi model was released on 3rd April 2010 in the U.S. at a price of $499. The display screen is a touch-pad (you can use your fingers to press the buttons) unlike others which is operated basically by a stylus (a pen like feature). The display screen is an LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) of 25cm with scratch proof properties. The iPad supports screen rotation in all four orientations and hence both the portrait and landscape views are accommodated. The connectivity aspect is purely wireless and hence Wi-Fi enabled. Hence, we can track the movement of the share market and travel freely (using Google maps) from any place at any time. It has god dual speakers with headphones and microphones which are Bluetooth enabled.

The most astonishing and also the most welcomed feature is the battery life or power. The i-pad uses a lithium-ion polymer battery which on an average gives 10 hours of video and 140 hours of audio. The storage space is comprised of variations like 16GB, 32GB and 64GB flash memory. The device uses an iPhone OS3.2 operating system (examples of operating system is Windows) and an 1GHz Apple A4 PoP SoC processor. Spread over a dimension of length of 242.8mm, width of 189.7mm and a thickness of 13.4 mm, the i-pad is very light with an approximate weight of 680 grams. Currently, the i-pad is assembled by a company called Foxconn for Apple Inc. in Shenzhen, China.

Apart from accessing internet 24×7, reading books and files can be done as these e-books can either be downloaded or transferred digitally into the iPad and saved for further use. The basic advantage is that one can carry around 30,000 e-novels or e-books which are impossible for paper books. Moreover, for working professionals, the files can be saved into the iPad and accessed at some later point of time, according to convenience. A share trader can track the stock movements and at the same time note important developments on a word document. Songs and movies (with supporting formats) can also be watched at will.

Apple is planning to launch the 3G variant on 30th April 2010 and with this, the surfing and downloading will be more farter and better. Thus, the iPad can be looked upon as the mobile library which is customized for each and every individual. With a price of around Rs. 23000, the product seems to be on the higher side for the Indian consumers but as prices fall fast in the technology market, hope is that it will become easily affordable to the Indian working class who needs to multi-task and keep track of the developments around their surroundings as well as the world.
